The State Rock of Texas and official State Fossil of Louisiana, Petrified Palm Wood makes a uniquely interesting cabochon because of the rod-like structures and the angle of the cut. The stone is the petrified through infusion of silica and other mineral elements (which account for the different colors) in the remains of palm trees from approximately 30 million years ago when the Gulf of Mexico extended much further north. The petrified wood is now found in northern areas of Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.
