Notable Occurrences: Montana
Sometimes referred to also as "Montana Moss Agate", this stone is reknowned for its patterns of golden to reddish brown to black inclusions and banding in a translucent chalcedony base. It can be found in gravel deposits of the Yellowstone River and traces its origin back to the volcanic activity in the Yellowstone area. The coloring within Montana Agate is due to the presence of manganese oxide (black), iron oxide (reddish browns) and other mineral oxides.
