Larimar

Hardness (Mohs): 4.5 - 6
Color: Sky Blue with White Streaks
Transparency: Opaque to Translucent
Notable Occurrences: Dominican Republic

Larimar, a rare form of blue pectolite of volcanic origin, occurs only in the province of Barahona, in south-western Dominican Republic. Although this stone was known to the local native inhabitants, upon the encroachment of the Western World (i.e., discovery of the new world in the 15th century), it dissapeard. It was not discovered again until the 20th century. The name is a combination of one of the discoverer's daughters, Larissa, and "mar", the spanish word for "sea", denoting the sea blue color.

Folklore/Metaphysical Properties: Most of the sources I have seen for Larimar extoll it's "tranquility" and its calming effect. It is said to bring a sense of peace and promote harmony and to enhance communication, particularly verbal expression by stimulating the higher chakras.
