Most commonly from Afghanistan and Russia, although found in other locations, Lapis Lazuli is a predominately blue stone that usually also has other minerals in it, particlularly calcite (white) and pyrite (gold). The pyrite inclusion has often been compared to a night sky full of stars. Since ancient times, lapis has been highly prized, even being ground into a pigment for use as cosmetics and paint, and, of course, it has been used in jewelry since antiquity as well, showing up in Egyptian tombs. The deeper blue lapis is referred to as "Lapis Lazuli", while a duller blue with a higher calcite content has been termed "Denim Lapis".
Folklore/Metaphysical Properties: Throughout the millenia, lapis has been been associated with many powers; so many, in fact, that it seems to be almost a "cure-all" -- most commonly seems to be the sense of lapis as being a "protecive" stone, protection from both physical and psychic "evil". A quick search on google will lead to to 100 different opinions on this matter...
