Jasper

Jasper is a variety of chert (varieties of finely crystalline quartz). It may contain up to 20% of foreign material which are the determining factor for the appearance of each variety of jasper. Although Jasper is most commonly found in red varieties (often due to the presence of iron or hematite), Jasper is not generally found with a uniform color. As can be seen in the pictures shown above, it has many variations in appearance, from striped to spotted, and is usually multicolored.

Folklore: Because of the many varieties of jasper, it's folkloric and metaphysical history is vast. Some of the more common historical uses of jasper, aside from ornamentation, have included the following:

• Jasper was thought to protect against snake and spider bites and also to cure snake bite by drawing venom from the wound.
• Some Native American tribes have been known to use jasper to bring rain, as it was been called the great "rain-bringer" in the fourth century.
• Ancient peoples used jasper to protect against pain, especially from childbirth.
• In medieval times jasper was said to give the wearer the power to heal insanity and to drive away evil spirits or cure those possessed by devils.
• Red jasper may be worn for protection.
• Clear the mind with yellow jasper.
• Brown jasper is an aid to concentration and may be worn for centering and grounding.
• Brings greater truth, destiny, monetary wealth.
• Can locate lost people or objects.
• Helps overcome jealousy.
• Augments dream awareness.
• Jasper has been reputed to bring courage, wisdom and firmness.
• Some of the healing qualities attributed to jasper, along with curing snake bites, include use for queasy stomach, hearing problems, consumption, hemorrhage and emphysema. Believed to aid in gall bladder, stomach, and kidney disorders. Red Jasper is said to aid the liver and the sense of smell.
• Jasper amulets were engraved with passages from the Book of the Dead by the ancient Egyptians to procure safe passage for the deceased in the realm of the dead.
• The astrological sign of jasper is leo.
• Jasper is an alternate birthstone for the month of January.

Each different variety of Jasper also has unique metaphysical and folklore associations.
