Sugilite

Sugilite, discovered in Japan in 1944 by its namesake, Professor Kenichi Sugi, is prized for its deep purple color. South Africa and India are other notable occurences of Sugilite. It is usually opaque, but occassionally found in translucent gel form, displaying the color of grape jelly, and is the most highly prized. This cab has nice translucency. Unfortunately, the lines are natural fractures that do diminish the beauty of this stone a little. But I get translucent material to work with so seldom that I felt it was worth cutting despite the flaws.
