Chrysoprase
Hardness (Mohs): 6.5 - 7
Color: Deep Green, Apple Green, Pale Green, Yellowish Green
Transparency: Translucent
Notable Occurrences: Australia, Brazil, Ural Mountains, U.S.
Chrysoprase is probably the most highly prized of the chalcedony group of gems when found in its best transparent rich green color. Most commonly, chrysoprase is translucent in greens ranging from a pale yellowish green to a crisp apple green to a deep saturated green. Composed chemically almost entirely of silicon dioxide, the green pigment is the presence of nickel oxide. It should be noted that the color can fade over time with prolonged exposure to sunlight and/or heat. This is due to dehydration, so that colors may possibly be recovered under moist storage. Material from Queensland Australia is more resistant to this fading because it is naturally more water-retentive. The name chrysoprase is from the Greek "chrysos" and "prason", meaning "gold-leek." This name was given to it in the 18th century when a vein was discovered in Silesia (what is now Poland) at the time of Frederick the Great of Prussia, who had a particular fondness for it, although the name chrysoprase was actually used for an entirely different mineral by the ancients. Chrysoprase was known well before it was bestowed with its modern name though, being popular among ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians using it in signets and seals as well as jewelry. Today, Australia is a primary source of chrysoprase, with a 1965 discovery of it at Marlborough Creek in Queensland being considered perhaps the most highly sought after for its rich green color and high quality.
Folklore/Metaphysical Properties: Chrysoprase is used for balancing yin-yang energy and aligning the chakras with the ethereal plane, particularly activating and energizing the heart chakra.. It is said to instill a sense of grace and facilitate deep meditative calmness, providing for non-judgmental attitudes and acceptance of self and others and facilitate a deep connection with mother earth. It is also used in treating disorders of the heart, increasing dexterity and for treating the reproductive organs, including increasing fertility and for other sexual imbalances.
