Amethyst Crystals

Amethyst is easily the most popular of the quartz minerals. It is crystalline quartz in shades of purple or lavender, with the darker richer colored varieties considered the most valuable. When cut properly, Amethyst displays dichroic characteristics, showing a bluish or reddish purple tinge when viewed from different angles. Namibia and Zambia in Africa are considered to be the best producers of high-quality gems, although amethyst is found throughout the world. The variety mined in those parts of Africa can have a color so deep that it may appear almost black from a distance. Some of the amethyst found in Russia is also very highly prized because of its strong dichroic qualities, with clear undertones of deep red. Brazil is the most prolific source of amethyst in the world today and so the most common source for cut stones on the market. Amethyst is often heated to intensify and purify its purple color. Light lavender colored amethyst is often referred to as "Rose de France Amethyst".

Amethyst Cut Stone

Metaphisical Properties and Folklore: Amethyst has been prized since ancient times, with much folklore and myth attached to it. In one greek myth, the goddess Diana transforms her handmaiden into a transparent crystal when she is caught up in a quarrel between the gods in order to protect her from Bacchus. After the quarrel has ended, Bacchus, filled with remorse, pours wine over the crystal, enveloping it in a rich violet gown.

Some of the more common folkloric uses of amethyst have included the following:

  • Amethyst was thought in ancient times to quicken the wit, protect soldiers in battle, and guard against contagious disease.
  • It has been carried as an antidote to drunkenness.
  • Amethyst is said to alleviates fears and depression.
  • Gives sense of direction; promotes inner peace and enable forgiveness.
  • Brings forth adaptability and greater vision.
  • Protects against illness, being an excellent blood cleanser and energizer.
