Agate is a banded, multicolored, variety of Chalcedony, a microcrystalline variety of Quartz. It occurs botryoidal, mammilary, stalactitic, massive, nodular, as smooth rounded pebbles, as banded masses, and in geodes. Agate is the most varied and popular of all Chalcedony, with literally hundreds of named varities and new ones being coined every year. It is extremely abundant and occurs in unusual and stunning varieties. The curved banding present is distinct from other forms of chalcedony and can be either shades of a single color or vary widely from one to the next. Impurities are often present in Agate and can form moss-like patterns in the mineral, creating what is referred to as Moss Agate (although referred to as agate, this is not actually layered and so not, strictly speaking, an agate, but another chalcedony). Another example of Agate with patterns created by impurities is Dendritic Agate, which contains manganese oxide that form tendril-like patterns resembling trees and landscapes. Many of the agates have been named according to their location, such as Priday Plume Agate which was discovered at the Priday Ranch (now the Richardson Ranch) outside of Madras, Oregon.
Metaphisical Properties and Folklore: In ancient times, agate was worn to placate the gods and to endow the wearer with a bold heart. It is said that Agate balances emotions, discerns the truth, accepts circumstances, powerful emotional healer.Wearing Agate was believed to cure insomnia and thought to insure pleasant dreams.
Each different variety of agate also has unique metaphysical and folklore associations.
